Samantha Fuller the Next Michelle Wie?

Saturday, October 8th, 2005
Is it just me or is golf taking the same path that gymnastics and tennis have over the last 20-30 years?   First you’ve got Tiger Woods turning pro and winning championships at age 20, now Michelle Wie going pro before she even has a driver’s license at age 15.

Now there is talk of another Michelle Wie in the making across the pond in the U.K.  Samantha Fuller, age 5 is clobbering other kids her own age by 25 strokes.  Her dad says she started playing the game of golf at age 2 and says she wants to be a golf professional.

She recorded the biggest-ever win at the 2005 British & Irish National six and under Wee Wonders Golf Champion-ships at the famous St Andrews course in Scotland.

Playing two rounds on the historic course, Samantha won by a massive 25 shots from her nearest competitor.

Samantha qualified for the event by winning the South of England Regional Championships in June and she also won the Chiswick Junior Tour Championship at the age of five.

This Michelle Wie phenomenon might be bigger than we think.  Imagine the LPGA in 20 years being dominated by teens as tennis and gymnastics are today.  By age 25 you’re a has-been in many sports today.
Thankfully golf is a sport that one can play their whole lifetime.  It sure is comforting to see that Jack Nicklaus is just now leaving the sport and he is in his mid-60s.   There is hope for the rest of us mere mortals!
