Michelle Wie Places 3rd at LPGA Fields Open

Sunday, February 26th, 2006
Nothing like getting your first paycheck after working hard, eh?  Michelle Wie picked up her first pro paycheck after a 3rd place finish at the LPGA Fields Open in her home state of Hawaii today.

Ok, so it is not a pro VICTORY, but you have to give the girl some credit, she played well.  She made a total of 7 birdies today and an ill-fated bogie to end her final round with a 66, finishing 13-under par with a total score of 203.

As one would expect, Wie had a huge following in her home state, getting cheers for every swing.  “I played awesome,” Wie said. “But unfortunately, not the way I wanted it to turn out”  said Wie after her final round.  Michelle earned $72,875 in her fourth pro start, not too shabby for a weekend of work, but paltry in comparison to what she would have won in a PGA event.

If she can win a few of these, maybe ratings will help these purses too!

Michelle Shoots 67 in Opening at LPGA Fields Open

Saturday, February 25th, 2006

Michelle Wie got off to a fast start on Thursday shooting a five-under 67.  The round put her only three shots behind Mexico’s Lorena Ochoa in Hawaii’s LPGA Fields Open.

Michelle mentioned that her biggest problem lately has been getting off to a fast start, and she sure did it today. In fact, she has managed to stay within striking distance of Ochoa, who fired a 64 for a one-shot lead over Wendy Ward and South Korea’s Seon Hwa Lee.

Michelle even admitted to being a bit nervous before ” hometown” fans.  A 10-footer for birdie at the first hole seemed to settled her down a bit. Wie followed her lone bogey at the par-five fifth with consecutive birdies and added three more, including an outstanding play out of a bunker on the par-five 14th. After hitting her five-iron approach into the bunker, she blasted out within two feet of the cup and tapped in.
