Blistering Start for Michelle Wie at Kraft

Friday, March 31st, 2006

Michelle Wie got off to a blistering start in her first major championship, the Kraft Nabisco championship being held this weekend in Rancho Mirage California.  Michelle could be on top of the leaderboard had it not been for a course record of 62 shot by Lorena Ochoa.

Michelle Wie racked up six birdies and the rest pars to put her at number two behind Ochoa. Annika Sorenstam shot a 71.  A disappointing round for the world’s number one ladies golfer.

If Michelle can play as well as she did on Thursday, and Ochoa backs off somewhat from her record-breaking golf, we could be in  For real shoot out.

Michelle Takes on John Deere Classic in 2006

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

16-year-old Michelle we will have another crack at beating the men this year at the John Deere classic.  This is the fifth time the young golfer has attempted to beat the men of the PGA.  Last time she played in the John Deere classic she missed the cut only by two coming in one under par at 141.

No doubt Michelle Wie’s participation in this year’s John Deere classic will bring no more spectators and generate more money for the tournament itself.  No woman has made the cut in a PGA event since 1945 when Babe Zaharias did it.  60 years is a big gap in the world of professional golf.  Michelle will eventually make the cut at a PGA tournament, it’s just a matter of time.  Now whether she can win that’s another story.

Michelle Wie and Condoleeza Rice

Monday, March 27th, 2006

Michelle Wie is making the rounds these days and is in with some pretty good company.  The US weekly time revealed in its latest edition that Michelle hooked up with Condoleezza Rice for a quick nine holes.

There is something about golf that brings out celebrities and politicians.  In fact no other sport carries with it the photo ops and publicity that professional golfers do with politicians and people with stature.  Imagine Condoleezza Rice suiting up and playing a quick couple periods with a Detroit redwings.  Just wouldn’t happen.  No word on the secretary of state’s score but I would imagine she chased the ball or two in the woods.
