Dakoda Dowd Makes Mom’s Cut at Ginn Clubs Open

Monday, May 1st, 2006

Hold onto your hats, we may have another Michelle Wie in the making.  13-year-old Dakoda Dowd made her LPGA debut at the Ginn Clubs and Resorts open this last weekend.  Event organizers made a special exemption for her, not only for her exceptional golf game at such a young age, but also because her mother has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and may only have a few months more to live.

No, she did not win the tournament.  No, she didn’t even make the cut.  But who, had only 13 years old can walk onto a professional golf tournament and birdie the first hole.  Most of us would not even be able to hit it off the tee at that age.

But this tournament was not about winning or making the cut for Dakoda.  It was simply to play well, or is that she could, for her mom whose dream it was to see her daughter play professionally.  Imagine her mother’s pride when she saw that first birdie drop.

Dakoda has already won dozens of tournaments in her short life.  And she definitely held her own this weekend shooting a 74 in her first round surrounded by the best women golfers in the world today.  Let’s hope her mom can defy the odds and see her play and many more LPGA events.  There’s a good chance she may live long enough to see her daughter and Michelle Wie duke it out on the golf course this year or next.  Now that will be something to watch.
