Michelle Wie Shoots 77 at John Deere First Round
Friday, July 14th, 2006Michelle Wie could be well on her way to going home for the weekend after shooting a 6 over par 77 in the first round of the John Deere Classic in the Quad Cities. The errant-shot day could have totally quashed her attempt at becoming the first woman to make a cut in a men’s PGA tournament in 50 some odd years. Michelle looked like any other hacker at times, putting her ball in the sand, the weeds, the woods and even the water on Thursday’s painful round. It’s amazing that she walked away with only a 77. Michelle will have to literally almost post a course record on Friday to insure a spot for the weekend.
One has to think that fans and possibly even some tournament executive boards are getting tired of the Wie attempts at making cuts in the mens’ tournaments. Will the novelty begin to wear off after this tournament? Will she continue to get exemptions to play in these tournaments? Only time will tell. She still is a big draw and if the money is there for tournament organizers, the bet is that she will continue to “do what she wants” and play where she wants to as long as they will have her. Let’s see if Britney Lincicome now gets her chance (if she wants to that is) to play with the men.
