Michelle Wie Shoots 77 at John Deere First Round

Friday, July 14th, 2006

Michelle Wie could be well on her way to going home for the weekend after shooting a 6 over par 77 in the first round of the John Deere Classic in the Quad Cities.  The errant-shot day could have totally quashed her attempt at becoming the first woman to make a cut in a men’s PGA tournament in 50 some odd years.  Michelle looked like any other hacker at times, putting her ball in the sand, the weeds, the woods and even the water on Thursday’s painful round.  It’s amazing that she walked away with only a 77.  Michelle will have to literally almost post a course record on Friday to insure a spot for the weekend.

One has to think that fans and possibly even some tournament executive boards are getting tired of the Wie attempts at making cuts in the mens’ tournaments.  Will the novelty begin to wear off after this tournament?  Will she continue to get exemptions to play in these tournaments?  Only time will tell.  She still is a big draw and if the money is there for tournament organizers, the bet is that she will continue to “do what she wants” and play where she wants to as long as they will have her.  Let’s see if Britney Lincicome now gets her chance (if she wants to that is) to play with the men.

You would think the John Deere Classic is a major tournament this week judging from the news and publicity it is getting.  And get this….Michelle Wie’s pic is plastered right on the home page of the PGA website!  (see below) After playing 18 holes with Michelle on Tuesday, defending champion Sean O’Hair believes she will make the cut this time around.  Even if she couldn’t swing a damn club, she sure looks good eh?

The Michelle Wie bashing goes on however, especially after the young golf phenom lost in the quarter finals of match play this last weekend.  Some people seem to be growing tired of what is starting to sound like excuses for not winning.  In her defense however, she has placed in the top 5 of the last 6 major events with the women.  But being ranked at number 2 in the women’s golf world is over top a bit.  Question now is….where will she rank in the men’s standings if she wins the John Deere Classic?

Wie Practices with Sean O’Hair at John Deere Classic

One advantage of losing out on the women’s match play this last weekend is that Michelle Wie could get an early start on her attempt to be the first woman in 45 years to make the cut at a US PGA event.  Michelle arrived in the Quad Cities early to get a look at the hilly TPC course at Deere Run.  Today, Wie joins JDC defending champion Sean O’Hair, Jason Day and Zach Johnson in a practice round that is the highlight of Youth Golf Day at Deere Run.
