Wie Finishes Last at 84 Lumber Classic

Sunday, September 17th, 2006

Michelle Wie has the European Master’s and the 84 Lumber Classic under her belt now - but neither are tournaments she would like to remember. She finished Friday’s round 2 of the tournament dead last, shooting a dismal 81 for a total of 14 over par for 2 rounds. In her past 99 holes, she has had seven birdies, and is 34-over par. But it still does not seem to faze Wie. She is still confident she can compete against the men and will have another shot to do so at the Casio World Open in Japan in November.

As things get worse, the pressure has to be more for Michelle. Now everyone is not betting on whether she will actually make the cut, but rather how many strokes she will miss it by. Ultimately, the quest for the PGA tour may hurt her in the long run.

Michelle Beats Daly in First Round

Friday, September 15th, 2006

Well, there is one PGA golfer that Michelle can beat and that is John Daly, at least one round anyway. Both golfers risk missing the cut at the 84 Lumber Classic this weekend.

Michelle shot an opening round of 77, five over par. Robert Allenby, foreshadowed Wie’s score by saying the long course would be a par 77 for Michelle.

Who was to blame other than the ungodly long course? Her putter of course. In her own words Michel said, My iron play was fantastic today,” Wie said. “My driver, aside from a couple of missed shots, was pretty good - my short game and putting let me down.”

The novelty of seeing Michelle do her thing with the man does not seem to be wearing off. As usual, Michelle attracted a huge gallery, the biggest of any of the players. Of course television cameras were all over her every shot even though she finished 13 shots off the lead.

And John Daly? Chances are he had the second-biggest gallery. As of this minute however, the PGA web site reveals that he has overtaken Michelle Wie for today’s round. And as of this minute Michelle is in last place after only eight holes and six over for the day. One has to wonder if she is going to grow tired of this.

PGA Site Features Michelle Wie Pic

The webmasters for the PGA web site can seem to get enough of Michelle Wie. Once again, her mug is prominent today on the PGA web site. (See below) Couldn’t be the past winter and defending champion Of the 84 Lumber Classic, could it? nnnnoooo… the PGA gets as much mileage out of Michelle as they can apparently. Maybe the tournament has been so mundane in past years that Michelle has brought a little life to it this year. The question still remains though, how many missed cuts can Michelle endure before the romance is gone?

Michelle’s tee time is at 1:39 p.m. today. It is unclear on the leaderboard of the site who she is teamed up with. Tournament officials probably dream last night of Sunday’s round being a pairing of Michelle Wie and John Daly. Now that would bring in the ratings! We will just have to wait and see.
