Al Czervik had a really flat backswing!

  • lakotal says:

yea, that dude Nicklaus really sucked man, steep backswing, 18 MAJORS, probably all luck right?
Hogan, as great as he was duck hooked. The LAST thing amateurs need is a flat swing that promotes a steep downswing that produces an outside in swing path =slice slice.
How many other flat backswing champions have there been?

If you look at photos of a direct DTL view (not here), Jack’s backswing was almost too _flat_ when he was young. Even later, he was never all that “steep,” except maybe in the way Leadbetter et al. note that most pros “steepen” the swing somewhat about halfway back. People still talk about how upright he was–and he was too much that way at times–but most of his career, his hands set over his right shoulder. His arc was just very wide and athletic, same idea as Tiger’s today.

  • emncaity says:

Or, maybe, the “steepness” of the backswing doesn’t matter much.

Hogan was 5′7″. Nicklaus played freshman basketball at Ohio State–not that he was ever all that tall, I think a shade over 5′11″ before the surgery and a little under 5′10″ after, but he had different assets than Hogan did. Still, Jack actually patterned some of his basics after Hogan, particularly the resistance between upper and lower halves, leg and hip drive, and firm left side (wrist, etc.) through impact.

    How is that swing “dirty”?

Still, people should pay attention to your underlying point. What matters isn’t visual perfection or beauty, but effective contact. And even that is only a means to an end, if you’re playing the game called “golf,” the point of which is to score low, not to see how closely your swing can match the latest theory. It’s amazing how many of the great players (almost all of them, actually) were in the “effective but not beautiful” mold.

Jesus carries a utility now, I think. He’s pretty smart.

  • MotivoStudio says:

way too steep backswing. how in the world did he win so much. ben hogan is definitely the best ball striker ever. he’s flat swing worked out pretty well. every should take his swing as an example.

dirty swing, but absolute flusher. How good were the flight of those pills – Jack will always be a champion

  • directorwvp2 says:

who is this ole guy … never heard of him. Just kidding … Jack you are awesome! You ushered in the era of modern golf and more importantly, you kept the game honest, clean, and full of integrity. Tiger can go on to win 50 majors … but you’ll always be mine and lots of others ALL TIME Favorite … second only to Jesus .. who can by the way hit a 1 iron … off water.

  • brh5934 says:

hogans left foot lifts, maybe not in his short irons but it definetely lifts in his backswing

  • lawlordt says:

one of the best of his time? what are you on? try the best of all time untill tiger breaks his record

  • FulviaUno says:

    Awesome, thanks.

  • smiffyjiffy says:

Ironic seeing as he’s one of the greatest golfers of all time yet you think you have enough authority to criticise his swing…please people, I think a reality check’s needed

  • Evafan133 says:

Even with his “out of control” left foot, he has a beautiful swing that works well none the less. Nicklaus was one of the best of his time, and a great ball striker.

  • Jablesnbits says:

and actually if you watch a video of every other modern professional golfers swing, watch their left foot.

  • Jablesnbits says:

for example if you watch the ben hogan swing, his left foot never lifts. Im not saying anything wrong about it, just has drawbacks that ide rather not have in my swing.

  • Jablesnbits says:

if your left knee has that much action its much harder to control your swing on a consistant basis, however it doese usually translate into higher clubhead speed. His first swing is crisp, very little lower body movement.

  • Evafan133 says:

He does that to make sure he has an inside-out swing.

  • anteater85 says:

    this guy is a machine

  • pat52007 says:

His left foot movement is really minimal and not a problem as long as his head is relatively still over the ball..I used to have this same movement when I was a young guy..I believe it allows for a bit more coil and reduces tension especially as you reach with the longer clubs. What I really like about Jack’s swing is how upright his hands are at the top, which normally forces you to finish reaching for the sky…a classic golf swing that is simple and reliable!!

  • SmithJuniorThe3rd says:

He makes it looks so easy! This is definitely a sport that favors skill, and not youth. TRUST ME! Lol!

  • PeterKoreaKim says:

    wtf are you talking about

  • curlygurly91 says:
