PostHeaderIcon Michelle Wie Becoming the Anna Kournikova of Golf?

michelle wie

Don’t get me wrong, at 16 she’s a very good golfer. But every other week she’s out there trying to conquer the mens PGA yet still hasn’t broken through in a big way on the LPGA. Heck, if Annika Sorenstam (arguably one of the greatest LPGA golfers ever) is having a hard time making a PGA cut, what does Michelle Wie think she can do that Annika can’t do? And now she’s out there trying to make headlines by firing her caddy. Note to Michelle: Your caddie isn’t to blame, your sucky playing ability is to blame.

I think she will break through with a victory, but I don’t see it happening for a couple of years. The caddy thing, was probably more her parents and agent than her. She needs more maturity, if she is going to win and if she is going to earn respect of the men and women she plays agains.

As far as the PGA, I think she should limit the number of tournaments she plays each year, more power to her if she thinks she can compete with the boys, but I don’t think she should take away spots from guys trying to make a living.

She has talent no doubt, but needs to learn how to harness it. This comes with maturity and experience. I am sure she will win a few LPGA events but I don’t think she will be an Annika anytime in the future. As to firing her caddie…. well Tiger fired Fluff several years ago and look how that turned out. You spend more time with your caddie than your spouse so you had better like them and be able to get along with each other.

Wie is very competent. Other than this last week she has been doing very good.
She is one of just a few women who can drive with the men. She has never finished last in a PGA event; so are you suggesting that the men who finished behind her aren’t competent to play – if she isn’t they aren’t.
No women has made the cut against men since Babe Didriksen Zaharias in 1945. It may very well be Wie to do it.
As far as firing her caddie I see that as a decision any golfer has to make and can’t imagine making headlines ever enters into the decision.

No, this is pure management style, they have a product and they need to maximize her ability, David Ledbetter is coaching her more and more and he only sees her playing on the PGA in 2 or 3 years, so id guess he knows what hes talking about

Michelle Wie is playing the occassional Mens PGA event for the tournament experience. Because she is only 16 she is severely limited in the number of events she is able to play on the LPGA. Personally I think its a good idea. Good for her, good for the sponsors and definitely good for womans golf. People who go and watch the men but not the ladies may get an idea of just how good the womens’ game is by seeing Michelle.

As far as her potential goes, gees youve got to be kidding yourself if you think this girl isnt going to be an absolute superstar. At 16 shes been runner up in 2 majors already this year. It was only inexperience that cost her playoff positions or outright wins. When she is playing the LPGA full time she will become the #1 player in the world. There is no surer bet in world sport than that. Whether she will be as dominant in the womans game as Tiger is in the mens is the only doubtful thing.

Yes, I think that she should try to excel in the LPGA first to get more experience with the pressures and then do the PGA

I think the golf world is in for a huge surprise. It may take a couple of years after all Michelle is only 19 but I think she is going to turn the golf world upside down and inside out. As far as all these gyrations with caddies and agents, mens tour etc, talk to Papa BJ as you can bet your bippy that for now he is calling the $hot$. Think $$$
