PostHeaderIcon Wie, Inkster Picked as Solheim Captains

Juli Inkster and Michelle Wie have been picked as captains to represent the team at the Solheim Cup this year.

Still winless, it could be argued that Michelle has no business being captain, coupled with a true veteran of the LPGA. However, Michelle has been putting really well lately, and she can drive the ball farther than almost anyone on the tour. Granted, Michelle still has not won a tournament, but she continues to be a fan favorite on the LPGA.

Could she be starting to emerge as the player that everyone wanted her to be 3-4 years ago? As always with Michelle, this should be interesting.

You are mistaken. Inkster and Wie are ‘captain’s picks’ to play on the team. As with most of the team golf events, most of the players are chosen automatically (i.e., based on their performance/ranking on their respective tours), while 1 or 2 are chosen by the team captain. These picks are completely discretionary on the captain’s part. Here is some text from the Solheim Cup website:

    ‘U.S. Team
For the 12-person squad, 10 players qualify for the U.S. Team by earning points for wins and top-20 finishes over a two-year qualifying period, with two players selected by the captain. U.S. players began earning points toward the 2009 U.S. Solheim Cup Team at the 2007 LPGA State Farm Classic in Springfield, Ill.’

and (for comparison), from the President’s Cup website:

‘Ten members of the 2009 U.S. Team will be selected based on official earnings from the 2007 Wyndham Championship through the 2009 PGA Championship (with money earned in 2009 counting as double), plus two Captain’s selections, which will be announced on Sept. 8.’
